Background Margaret Newman was called to nursing while caring for her mother who suffered from ALS. She earned her Bachelor's degree from the University of Tennessee in 1962 and her Master's from the University of California in 1964 . Newman continued her education and received her doctorate from NYU in 1971. She published several pieces of work including her Health Theory. In addition to research and theory, Newman served as a faculty member at the University of Tennessee, the University of Minnesota, along with several others.
